The design criteria for the renovated Orchard Parade Hotel was to transform an old nondescript and pastiche landscape into a dynamic and vibrant urban space incorporating water features, rockwork, and paving patterns in a “Mediterranean” theme. The landscape design solution, for this prominent site along the city’s ceremonial route, created a strong modern, distinctive and holistic identity. The “ Mediterranean” theme is expressed in the juxtaposition of warm colors, rich textures, and arid plant forms, for a continuous and regular pattern language on the ground plane so as to knit together the Tanglin, Orchard Road facades, and the other disparate elements of the spread-out site.
